A path of fleeting dreams. 2024
In A path of fleeting dreams, I explore the dynamics of consumerism through the intimate lens of my family history. In devising this video work, I reflected on my mother’s 1980 migration from the Philippines to regional Australia—a journey driven by personal ambition, the pursuit of the Western dream, and the desire for financial security. This journey was also influenced by societal and familial pressures that perpetuate the pursuit of achievement.
A female performer wears my mother’s terno (traditional Filipino dress) - her presence in the minimal space, filled with various household objects, as she meanders through the set, she interacts with these objects, symbolising the comforts and noise that accompany the pursuit of a new life/home in a foreign land.
These mundane objects become touchstones of memory and identity. The performer's interactions evoke a sense of familiarity and solace. Her gestures are symbolic of seeking comfort in the familiar and adapting to the new.
Directed, designed and produced by Sherry Quiambao. In collaboration with artist & choreographer Emma Fishwick, filmmaker Apurva Gupta, performer Keana Mislang with sound composition in development by Tom Lee.
The artist acknowledges the support of the State of Western Australia through the DLGSC. This project was developed in residency at Fremantle Arts Centre.
